Understanding CranioSacral

Cranio/Sacral Therapy was developed by Dr. John E. Upledger.   Dr. Upledger was an osteopath, a professor of biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Michigan.  While there he worked with various researchers who performed and published the clinical research that gave us the basis resulting in what was called Cranio/Sacral Therapy.  In 1985 Dr. Upledger founded the Upledger Institute and was successful in training thousands of people world wide in the technique of Cranio/Sacral therapy.

CranioSacral Therapy approaches the body with light touch which can create dramatic improvements to daily life.
The central nervous system is one structure in the body that has the most influence over health and well-being.  The Cranio/Sacral system has great impact on the central nervous system.  The Cranio/Sacral system is the soft tissue that protects the brain and spinal cord and the cerebral spinal fluid which flows in the membrane that around the brain and spinal cord.

As we move through our day, the body endures stresses and strains that the body usually absorbs.  The body only tolerates a certain amount of stress before it creates a tightening of tissues which in turn can potentially affect the brain and the spinal cord.

When this happens, it can compromise the function of the central nervous system.  The performance of every other system in the body is affected, function drops, and the body feels a loss of energy or pain that has no connection to a dis-ease process.

A Cranio/Sacral session releases tensions allowing the entire body to relax and self-correct.  The touch is very gentle, which is often more of a resistance type of touch that is measured to be about the weight of a nickel.  The practitioners can evaluate the internal movements of the body locating areas of tension and tightness by monitoring the cranial rhythm.  The hands are very light and hold the areas of tension with a light resistance allowing the body to release restrictions and shift to proper positioning or alignment.

When the central nervous system is free to perform at its best and once tissue has released tension, pain is reduced and more often eliminated, the body is stronger to resist dis-ease and enjoys an overall improvement to health and well-being.

Cranio/Sacral Therapy can be done on all ages from newborn to 100+. However with children up to age 6, due to the separation of the cranial bones, one has to take extra study to perform it properly.  If one is not trained in pediatrics do not do this on children under 6 years of age.

Another aspect of Cranio/Sacral Therapy is the energetic connection to the Chakra Energy Centers that also relate to the endocrine system.   The emotional system is also woven with the subtle anatomy.  The energy structures assisting emotional lock down can be cleared with Somato Emotional Release (SER), a 'second' step in Cranio/Sacral therapy work.  As clearing the emotional blockages is complete, the clearing of energy cysts (abnormal wave patterns in the energy field reflecting from the physical restriction the result will be less density to the physical vehicle allowing for a 'higher and lighter' vibrational frequency to the overall physical vehicle.
